Cities are the beating heart of the modern economy and their significance will only increase further in the future. They already generate the lion’s share of our gross domestic product. Today’s demanding consumers live, work and spend their leisure time in the city, resulting in growth in demand for goods and services. At the same time, they want the city to be and remain a livable environment or to offer even better quality of life in the future.

Good city logistics are keys to the economic vitality and attractiveness of our cities. They ensure that online orders are delivered to our homes, restaurants can serve their customers, stores can display the latest collections on time and renovation work can be carried out smoothly. Urbanization places new demands on mobility within a city. As customers’ requirements change, city logistics networks are becoming more and more finely meshed and services are increasingly being provided on a just-in-time basis.

If current policies remain unchanged, the field of city logistics will continue to grow, although this will often be at the expense of accessibility, quality of life and safety in our cities. That means we need to adopt a new approach to city logistics – one that focuses on doing more with fewer transport movements and fewer emissions.

Parties in the Green Deal Zero Emission Urban Logistics share the goal of urban deliveries with the lowest possible emissions by 2025, the ultimate aim being to reduce harmful emissions (CO2, NOx, particulate matter) due to urban logistics to zero. Properly set up urban logistics leads not only to improving the ecological but also economic situation. Collaboration allows us to explore how zero emission cities can be put into practice. The solution lies not only in new logistics solutions but also in the combination of new technologies, public-private partnership and amended regulations.

Come to get inspired, exchange experiences and engage in discussions on sustainable urban logistics projects and activities, and how to reconcile the interests of all key stakeholders. Connekt is an independent network for smart and sustainable mobility. It also is the organisation that came up with initiatives such as Smart City Embassy, Dutch Cycling Embassy, Lean & Green and other projects. More information:
